Where this range comes from

Joint advisory, AJCN 2025 (PMC12264624)

The same advisory also gives an absolute reference: 80 to 120 g per day may be easier to follow.

Guidance is uncertain about which body weight to use at higher body weights, so treat the range as a starting point.

Mealyno's app default: 2.0 g/kg in a deficit (top of the ISSN range for exercising adults). This calculator shows the published ranges instead.

Read the full disclaimer

Every number on this page (calorie targets, macro splits and any suggested meal plan) is produced by formulas (Mifflin-St Jeor for basal metabolic rate, standard activity multipliers) or, for AI-generated meal plans, by a language model applying those same formulas. On meal-plan pages the carbohydrate figure for each meal is calculated by difference: total calories minus protein and fat calories, divided by 4. It is not measured or estimated on its own, so read it as an arithmetic balance and not as an independent nutritional analysis of the dish. None of it is individualized medical or nutritional advice, and none of it has been reviewed by a registered dietitian, physician or other licensed healthcare professional.

Ask your doctor or a registered dietitian what is right for you before starting a new diet, especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a diagnosed medical condition, take prescription medication, or have a history of disordered eating. If you have kidney disease or another medical condition, ask your clinician before raising protein.

Mealyno never recommends a calorie target below your calculated Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR), the minimum energy your body needs at complete rest. Even the most aggressive weight-loss setting is clamped at that floor.

Calorie and BMR estimates use the Mifflin-St Jeor equation (Mifflin MD, St Jeor ST, et al. Am J Clin Nutr. 1990).

The range for people losing weight

The joint advisory on nutrition during weight reduction, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 2025, suggests 1.2 to 1.6 g of protein per kilogram of body weight per day while you are actively losing weight. For a 70 kg person that is 84 to 112 g a day, with a midpoint of 98 g. This calculator uses exactly that row when you pick "Lose weight" and do not lift weights.

The number sits above the 0.8 g per kilogram recommended allowance for healthy adults, which the advisory cites as a floor. The advisory describes its own guidance as a synthesis of guidelines and expert opinion, so read the range as a starting point and not as a requirement.

A second reference: 80 to 120 grams a day

The same advisory gives an absolute reference as well as a per-kilogram one: 80 to 120 g of protein a day may be easier to follow, because it is one number you can plan around. If your per-kilogram range lands close to that band, either way of thinking gives a similar target. At higher body weights the two can drift apart, and the advisory says guidance is uncertain about which body weight to use, so the calculator shows both.

Splitting it across the day

Published per-meal guidance from the International Society of Sports Nutrition is 20 to 40 g of protein, or about 0.25 g per kilogram of body weight. At 98 g a day, three meals give about 33 g each, four give about 25 g and five give about 20 g. Both three and four meals land inside the per-meal band, so pick the pattern that fits your day.

Under the result the page builds seven example days at your calorie level from real plans in the Mealyno library. Each day meets your midpoint, and no meal name repeats in the week. Switch to five meals a day and the preview builds days from smaller meals of 450 kcal or less.

Where Mealyno's app differs

Inside the Mealyno app the default protein target in a deficit is 2.0 g per kilogram, which is the top of the ISSN range for exercising adults. That is higher than the 1.2 to 1.6 g per kilogram row used here. The calculator shows the published ranges so you can see both and decide with a clinician or dietitian what suits you.

How to use the number

Start from the midpoint, then check the split against a normal day of food. The guides show what 100, 120 and 150 g looks like in real meals, and the list of foods ranked by protein per 100 kcal helps when calories are tight. Calories still matter: use the calorie calculator to set them, then come back with the result in the address as ?kcal= so the example days match.

  • Pick the midpoint for a first week, then adjust within the range.
  • Spread protein across meals instead of saving it for dinner.
  • Count cooked and raw weights consistently when you use the food tables.

Worked example

A person weighing 70 kg who wants to lose weight: 70 x 1.2 = 84 g and 70 x 1.6 = 112 g, midpoint 98 g. At 1,600 kcal that is 25% of calories from protein at the midpoint.

A person weighing 60 kg gets 72 to 96 g. A person weighing 90 kg gets 108 to 144 g, and the advisory's caution about which body weight to use applies more strongly there.

Protein and weight loss questions

How much protein should I eat to lose weight?

Published guidance suggests 1.2 to 1.6 g per kilogram of body weight per day during weight reduction. For 70 kg that is 84 to 112 g. The calculator picks the row for you and shows its source.

Is 100 grams of protein a day enough?

It sits inside the range for many body weights. At 70 kg the range is 84 to 112 g, so 100 g is a little above the midpoint. Use your own weight in the calculator to check.

Should I use my current weight or my goal weight?

Use your current weight. The advisory says guidance is uncertain about which body weight to use at higher body weights, so treat the result as a starting point and ask a dietitian if that applies to you.

Why does the app default differ from this range?

The app uses 2.0 g per kilogram in a deficit, the top of the ISSN range for exercising adults. This page shows the published weight-loss row so you can compare the two.

How much protein per meal?

The ISSN position stand gives 20 to 40 g per meal, or about 0.25 g per kilogram. Three to five meals usually land in that band.

Is a high-protein diet safe?

Ranges on this page are general guidance for healthy adults. If you have kidney disease or another medical condition, ask your clinician before raising protein.
