Best Calorie Counter Apps (2026): Honest Picks
Mealyno makes one of the apps on this list, and we put it first, so read this page as a vendor's view. Every claim about the other eight comes from their own site or store page, opened on 1 October 2026. Where we could not confirm something, the table says so.
Updated 1 October 2026 · How Mealyno builds its plans
Disclosure and scope
This guide covers nine apps: Mealyno, TrackAI, Cal AI, Formo, Welmi, fatsecret, MyFitnessPal, Cronometer and YAZIO. They are the ones that come up most when people search for a calorie counter, either in English or in the Ukrainian App Store.
We list Mealyno first because we built it and we know it best. That is a conflict of interest, and it is the reason the table below uses a plain rule: only facts we could read on a public page go in. Anything else is marked as not verified.
This is general information for healthy adults. A calorie counter gives you an estimate of what you ate. It is not medical advice, and it does not replace a conversation with a doctor if you have a health condition.
How we chose
We looked at five things that matter in daily use. None of them says which app is best for everyone, because that depends on the phone you own and the language you read.
- Logging methods: photo, barcode, text or voice, and a manual diary.
- Ukrainian interface: whether the app can be used in Ukrainian.
- Free use: what you can do without paying, and whether a trial is the only free part.
- Platforms: iPhone, Android, browser.
- Honest limits: what the app says about itself, and what we could not confirm.
The apps side by side
The table shows only what the sources below state. Cells that say not verified mean the page we opened does not say, so we do not claim either way.
| App | Logging methods | Ukrainian UI | Free use | Platforms |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mealyno | Photo, text description, barcode, manual diary | Yes | Photo tool 1 scan a day without signup; 3 free scans per account; free barcode lookups | Browser; no App Store or Google Play app yet |
| TrackAI | Photo; barcode not mentioned on its site or store page | Yes | No free version; 3-day free trial | iPhone and Android |
| Cal AI | Photo, barcode, text description | No | Scan results need a subscription; 3-day free trial | iPhone and Apple Watch; its FAQ also covers Android |
| Formo | AI photo logging | Yes | Not verified | iPhone (App Store) |
| Welmi | Photo, voice, barcode | Yes | Not verified | iPhone (App Store) |
| fatsecret | Not verified | Yes | Its store page says it is free | iPhone, Apple Watch |
| MyFitnessPal | Not verified here | No | Not verified here | iPhone (App Store) |
| Cronometer | Not verified; tracks 95+ vitamins and minerals | No (English only) | Not verified | iPhone (App Store) |
| YAZIO | Not verified; also has fasting | No | Not verified | iPhone (App Store) |
Not verified means the page we opened does not state it. App Store entries were read on the Ukrainian storefront, except Cal AI (US).
Mealyno
Mealyno runs in the browser, in English and Ukrainian. You can photograph a meal, describe it in words, scan a barcode or type it in. A photo scan lists every ingredient with grams and a confidence score, and you can edit each line.
For people who only want to try it, the free options are: the free photo calorie tool gives one scan a day with no signup, a free account adds 3 photo scans and unlimited barcode lookups, and the calculators stay free. Paid plans start at $8.99 a month (269 ₴ in Ukraine), and there is a 7-day trial with no card.
The clear weakness is that Mealyno has no App Store or Google Play app yet. There is no Apple Health or Health Connect sync and no home-screen widget today. If you want a phone app, look at the next sections.
Photo-first apps: TrackAI, Cal AI, Formo, Welmi
TrackAI is built around photo counting, has a Ukrainian interface and recognises dishes such as borscht and varenyky according to its FAQ. It has no free version, only a 3-day trial. In App Store reviews from Ukraine, users report that photo scanning needs a paid subscription after the trial, and the same reviews include many five-star comments about speed and ease.
Cal AI offers photo, barcode and text logging and has a very large rating base on the US App Store. Its store page says scan results require a subscription, and its language list does not include Ukrainian.
Formo is an AI photo tracker with a Ukrainian interface, and it was the first result for the search «калорії по фото» in the Ukrainian App Store on 1 October 2026. Welmi logs by photo, voice and barcode and also has a Ukrainian interface. We could not verify pricing for either, so check the store page before you install.
Established trackers: fatsecret, MyFitnessPal, Cronometer, YAZIO
fatsecret describes itself as free, has a Ukrainian interface, a food database adapted per country, Apple Watch support and Health app integration. If your first requirement is a free diary on iPhone, it is worth opening.
MyFitnessPal is a food diary app, and its Ukrainian App Store page lists 19 languages without Ukrainian. Cronometer is English only on that storefront, tracks 95+ vitamins and minerals and cites a curated database of 1.1 million+ verified foods, which suits people who care about micronutrients.
YAZIO combines a calorie counter, a food tracker and intermittent fasting, and its language list has no Ukrainian. For the long version on MyFitnessPal, see our alternatives page.
Which one for which person
No single app fits everyone. These are the rules of thumb we would use ourselves, based on the facts above.
- You want a Ukrainian interface and want to try photo counting before paying: Mealyno or Formo. Mealyno's free tool needs no signup.
- You want a native iPhone app with photo logging in Ukrainian: TrackAI, Formo or Welmi, after reading the current price.
- You scan packaged food all day: Welmi, Cal AI or Mealyno, which all list barcode scanning.
- You want a free diary on iPhone: fatsecret, according to its store page.
- You track vitamins and minerals closely: Cronometer, if English is fine for you.
- You eat Ukrainian home cooking and want plans and shopping lists too: Mealyno has Ukrainian dish pages and meal plans.
Questions
What is the best calorie counter app?
It depends on your phone, language and budget. For Ukrainian interface plus a free way to try photo counting, Mealyno and Formo are options. For a free iPhone diary, fatsecret describes itself as free. Check the table above against your own needs.
Is there a calorie counter app with photo recognition that is free?
Mealyno's browser tool gives one free photo scan a day with no signup, and a free account adds 3 scans. TrackAI has no free version, and Cal AI says scan results need a subscription. Both offer a 3-day trial.
Which calorie counter works in Ukrainian?
Mealyno, TrackAI, Formo, Welmi and fatsecret have a Ukrainian interface according to their pages. Cal AI, MyFitnessPal, Cronometer and YAZIO do not list Ukrainian.
Do these apps scan barcodes?
Welmi and Cal AI list barcode logging, and Mealyno has free barcode lookups. Barcode scanning is not mentioned on the TrackAI site or store page. We did not verify it for the others.
Why does Mealyno rank itself first?
We built it, so it comes first and we say so. The order is not a score. The table lists only what public pages state, and gaps are marked.
Are photo calorie counts accurate?
They are estimates. Portion size is the hardest part to see in a photo, so check the grams and edit them. Cal AI's own FAQ says about 80% accurate, and Mealyno makes no accuracy percentage claim.
