Published per-meal guidance is 20 to 40 g, or about 18 g for your weight.

That is 22 to 30% of 1,500 kcal.

Where this range comes from

Joint advisory, AJCN 2025 (PMC12264624)

The same advisory also gives an absolute reference: 80 to 120 g per day may be easier to follow.

Guidance is uncertain about which body weight to use at higher body weights, so treat the range as a starting point.

Mealyno's app default: 2.0 g/kg in a deficit (top of the ISSN range for exercising adults). This calculator shows the published ranges instead.

Read the full disclaimer

Every number on this page (calorie targets, macro splits and any suggested meal plan) is produced by formulas (Mifflin-St Jeor for basal metabolic rate, standard activity multipliers) or, for AI-generated meal plans, by a language model applying those same formulas. On meal-plan pages the carbohydrate figure for each meal is calculated by difference: total calories minus protein and fat calories, divided by 4. It is not measured or estimated on its own, so read it as an arithmetic balance and not as an independent nutritional analysis of the dish. None of it is individualized medical or nutritional advice, and none of it has been reviewed by a registered dietitian, physician or other licensed healthcare professional.

Ask your doctor or a registered dietitian what is right for you before starting a new diet, especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a diagnosed medical condition, take prescription medication, or have a history of disordered eating. If you have kidney disease or another medical condition, ask your clinician before raising protein.

Mealyno never recommends a calorie target below your calculated Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR), the minimum energy your body needs at complete rest. Even the most aggressive weight-loss setting is clamped at that floor.

Calorie and BMR estimates use the Mifflin-St Jeor equation (Mifflin MD, St Jeor ST, et al. Am J Clin Nutr. 1990).

What this calculator does

Some people eat much less than before, for example while using a GLP-1 medication. Published nutrition guidance for weight loss suggests spreading protein across smaller meals. Ask your prescriber or a dietitian what fits you.

This page uses the general weight-loss protein range, not drug-specific numbers. It does not ask which medicine you use and it gives no advice about any medication. You enter weight and calories, it returns a range with its source, and it builds example days from small meals.

The published guidance

The joint advisory "Nutritional priorities to support GLP-1 therapy for obesity" (ACLM, ASN, OMA and TOS, American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 2025) suggests 1.2 to 1.6 g of protein per kilogram of body weight per day during weight reduction, and notes that an absolute target of 80 to 120 g a day may be easier to follow. For a 70 kg person the per-kilogram range is 84 to 112 g, midpoint 98 g.

The advisory describes itself as a guideline synthesis and expert opinion, not trials in people on these medicines. Treat every number here as a starting point for a conversation with your prescriber or a dietitian, not as a target that is right for you.

Small meals, protein first

When appetite is low, a target of 98 g can feel large. Split over five small meals it is about 20 g each, which is inside the 20 to 40 g per-meal guidance from the ISSN position stand. Choose five meals and the example days are composed from meals of 450 kcal or less, each day within 75 kcal of the calories you entered.

The food tables show which everyday foods carry the most protein for their calories, so you can plan small portions that still count. The guides show what 30 g of protein looks like and how to reach 100 g in a day.

Limits

This is general nutrition information for healthy adults, generated by Mealyno from published formulas and not reviewed by a doctor or dietitian. It gives no advice about medication. If you have kidney disease or another medical condition, ask your clinician before raising protein. Ask your prescriber or a dietitian what fits you.

Worked example

A 70 kg person: 70 x 1.2 = 84 g and 70 x 1.6 = 112 g, midpoint 98 g. In five meals that is about 20 g each.

The advisory's absolute reference of 80 to 120 g a day is shown alongside the per-kilogram range, so you can compare two published ways of setting the target.

Protein and eating less: questions

How much protein per day when I am eating less?

General weight-loss guidance suggests 1.2 to 1.6 g per kilogram of body weight per day, or 80 to 120 g a day as an absolute reference. For 70 kg that is 84 to 112 g.

Is this different for Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro or Zepbound?

This calculator uses general weight-loss guidance, not drug-specific numbers. It does not ask which medicine you use. Ask your prescriber or a dietitian what fits you.

How much protein per meal?

The ISSN position stand gives 20 to 40 g per meal, or about 0.25 g per kilogram. Five small meals of about 20 g each reach a target of around 100 g.

What does the advisory say about its own evidence?

It describes its guidance as guideline synthesis and expert opinion, not trials in people on these medicines. Treat the numbers as a starting point.

Can I trust the example days?

They are real days from Mealyno's plan library, checked against a numeric gate, and meals are never resized. They are examples, not medical advice.

Should I ask someone before changing what I eat?

Yes. Ask your prescriber or a dietitian what fits you. If you have kidney disease or another medical condition, ask your clinician before raising protein.
