Meal Plan for Couples: One Dinner, Two Portions

Two adults who eat together rarely need the same amount of food. One may be cutting while the other maintains, and they are often different sizes. This guide shows how to cook one dinner and still hit two different targets, with the numbers worked through for a real-looking couple.

Why couples end up with the wrong portions

When a couple splits a recipe in half, one person is usually over their target and the other under it. Recipes serve a number of people, not a number of calories, so an even split ignores body size, activity and goals. The fix is not two separate dinners. It is one pot with a different amount on each plate.

Two targets from two profiles

Take Adult A, a woman, 34, 168 cm, 64 kg, lightly active, losing weight, and Adult B, a man, 36, 182 cm, 84 kg, moderately active, maintaining. Their daily targets differ by 1,206 kcal, so a shared menu cannot serve both from one equal plate.

Adult Bman, 36, 182 cm, 84 kg, moderately active, maintaining2,794134978

Targets use the same equations as Mealyno's single-person planner. They are estimates, not prescriptions.

One dinner, two plates

Dinner is chicken, rice and broccoli with a little olive oil. The shared dish is built for the average of the two dinner targets, 767 kcal. Adult A's plate is scaled by 0.72 and Adult B's by 1.27.

The same dinner on two plates
PersonPortionPlate g: chicken / rice / broccoli / oilDinner protein g
Adult A× 0.72120 / 175 / 120 / 1045
Adult B× 1.27210 / 310 / 210 / 1779

USDA values per 100 g: roasted chicken breast, cooked white rice, raw broccoli, olive oil. Amounts are rounded to 5 g.

A week of the same dinner, bought for two

Over seven nights Adult A eats 840 g of cooked chicken and 1,225 g of cooked rice, and Adult B eats 1,470 g of chicken and 2,170 g of rice. The shopping list adds the two together, 2,310 g of cooked chicken for the week, instead of doubling one person's amount. A list that doubles a single portion would leave the larger eater short and the smaller one with leftovers.

Share dinners, keep breakfasts and lunches separate

Most couples are not at the same table for every meal. In the household planner each person has their own toggles for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snack, so a couple can plan shared dinners and weekends and leave weekday lunches personal. Portions and the shopping list count only the people who eat each meal, so the list does not buy lunch for someone who eats out.

When the goals differ

A shared menu does not change the dish for a goal. It changes the amount. A person who is losing weight eats a smaller plate of the same food, and their protein is checked against their own target. If a day ends well under the protein target, the plan flags it and can suggest an optional add-on that fits that person's diet and allergies, rather than rewriting the shared dishes.

Diets work the same way. If one partner is vegetarian and the other eats everything, the base dish is checked against both and the vegetarian gets an adapted version of the dish where the base conflicts.

What a couple needs from the planner

A couple is a household of two, so it fits the Essential plan, which allows up to four people including you (Family covers up to six and Premium up to eight). The free plan covers one person. If you only want even portions, the “For the family” preset in the plan generator makes identical portions without per-person sizing, on any plan.

Questions

How do two people with different calorie needs share one meal plan?

They share the menu and differ in portion size. Each person's plate is scaled to their own calorie target for that meal, so the same dish gives one person more food than the other.

Can one of us lose weight while the other maintains?

Yes. Each adult has their own goal, and the portion follows it. Talk to a doctor or dietitian before a large calorie cut.

Do we both have to eat every meal from the plan?

No. Each person switches meals on or off, and the portions and shopping list count only the people who eat each meal.

Does the diary log both our portions?

It logs the account owner's portion only. Each partner who wants a diary can use their own account.

Are the targets medical advice?

No. They are estimates from standard equations for healthy adults. Pregnancy, breastfeeding or a medical condition change real needs, so ask a professional.
