Pescatarian meal plan: fish, plants and a full sample day

This page is for people who eat fish and seafood but no meat or poultry. Most pescatarians also eat eggs and dairy. Some arrive there for ethical or environmental reasons, some to eat more fish, and some because they want a simple rule that is easier to keep than a vegan one.
The pattern is flexible and easy to eat out with, which is part of its appeal. The risks are smaller but real: days can become cheese and pasta, fish choices can be repetitive, and meat stock hides in places you would not look. The sections below cover what to avoid, what to check on labels, easy swaps, and a sample day.
What to avoid
Everything from land animals and birds, including the products made from them:
- Beef, pork, lamb, veal and game
- Chicken, turkey, duck and goose
- Sausages, salami, ham, bacon, pâté and other processed meat
- Meat stock, bone broth and gravy made from them
- Lard, tallow and suet
- Gelatin, which is made from animal bones and skin (fish gelatin is fine)
Hidden meat ingredients
The products below are the usual reasons a pescatarian meal turns out not to be one:
| Where it hides | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Soups, stews and rice dishes | Chicken or beef stock is the default base. |
| Stock cubes and bouillon powder | Many are meat-based even when the pack shows vegetables. |
| Refried beans, pastry and some bread | Lard and animal fat are traditional. |
| Sweets, marshmallows and some yogurts | Gelatin is usually made from pork or beef; fish gelatin is fine. Agar and pectin are plant alternatives. |
| Pizza, salads and baked potatoes | Bacon bits and pepperoni are common toppings. |
| Cheese made with animal rennet | Strict pescatarians choose cheese made with microbial or vegetable rennet. |
| Caesar dressing, Worcestershire sauce | They contain anchovies, which are fine for pescatarians but not for vegetarians or vegans. |
Easy swaps

| Chicken breast | White fish, salmon, tuna or prawns |

A pescatarian sample day
This day was chosen from the Mealyno plan corpus because it includes a fish dish. Every dish name passes the meat rules of the diet checker.
| A sample day | kcal | Protein | Carbs | Fat |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BreakfastGreek Yogurt with Gluten-Free Granola and Honey300g | 400 | 22 g | 51 g | 12 g |
| LunchQuinoa Bowl with Black Beans and Corn450g | 550 | 20 g | 84 g | 15 g |
| DinnerBaked Cod with Sweet Potato Mash and Broccoli500g | 700 | 50 g | 71 g | 24 g |
| SnackMixed Berries with Walnuts120g | 150 | 3 g | 10 g | 11 g |
| Day total | 1,800 | 95 g | 216 g | 62 g |
Built from a day of the Mealyno plan corpus; every dish name passes the same diet checker the app uses.
The checker reads names, so a soup or a risotto in any plan could still be made with meat stock. When you cook it, use vegetable or fish stock and check any packaged ingredient.
Fish, nutrition and labels
Health authorities in several countries suggest roughly two portions of fish a week, one of them oily, such as salmon, sardines, mackerel or herring. Oily fish is the main dietary source of the omega-3 fats EPA and DHA. Some large predatory fish, such as shark and swordfish, contain more mercury: official advice is to avoid them in pregnancy and for young children, and to keep tuna and oily fish within the recommended weekly amounts.
Variety matters for the same reason and for the sake of your budget: tinned sardines, frozen white fish and mussels are affordable and keep well. If sustainability matters to you, look for a recognised certification label. On packaged food, read the stock and gelatin lines first.
Plans to adapt
There is no pescatarian-specific grid. The vegetarian plans contain no meat and leave room for fish, and the high-protein plans are a place to see how much protein you need:
Checking products in the store
When you scan a barcode, Mealyno reads the ingredient data and flags meat and animal-derived additives such as gelatin against the diet profile you saved, while fish stays allowed. Use it for soups, stock cubes and ready meals, where meat is most often hidden.
Important note
This page is general information, not medical advice. If you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, feeding young children or managing a health condition, ask your doctor or dietitian about the right fish choices and any supplements before changing your diet.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between pescatarian and vegetarian?
A pescatarian eats fish and seafood, and a vegetarian does not. Both normally include eggs and dairy.
Do pescatarians eat eggs and dairy?
Usually yes, although the definition is personal. You choose the rules that fit you.
How much fish is enough?
Health authorities in several countries suggest around two portions a week, including one oily fish. Your clinician can advise on your situation.
Is fish sauce allowed?
Yes, it is made from fish. It is not suitable for vegetarians or vegans.
Do I need a supplement?
Fish, eggs and dairy cover vitamin B12 and most omega-3 needs, so many pescatarians do not. Ask a dietitian about your own diet.
Does Mealyno build pescatarian plans?
Yes. Choose pescatarian in your diet profile and generated meals exclude meat and poultry, while fish and seafood stay allowed.
